Benefits of Laughter

Laughter is one of my favourite stress management techniques. It is free, contagious and effective. Whenever I start to work with clients experiencing high stress or anxiety levels, I always “prescribe” watching at least one funny movie or show per week. Laughter provides countless physical and emotional benefits. We can all benefit from a higher doze of daily and weekly laughter.people laughing

Did you know that laughter reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine and dopamine? It also increases the level of health-enhancing hormones like endorphins, and neurotransmitters. Laughter increases the number of antibody-producing cells and enhances the effectiveness of T cells. All of which translates into a stronger immune system.

How can you increase your dose of daily or weekly laugh?

1- Make it a mission to watch at least one great movie of show that will make you laugh. We all have a different sense of humour and there are movies and TV. Shows that cater to all.
2- Make a commitment to do at least one “fun or enjoyable activity” a week. This will inevitably bring a smile and maybe even some laughter into your life.
3- Socialize with Friends more often. Having friends over for a party, game night or just a walk, are great ways to add ‘laughing time” and increase good feelings.
4- Go to a comedy club.
5- Learn and share the art of telling jokes. This art is quickly being lost in our society. Learning and telling jokes is something that will bring pleasure and laughter into your life, but it will also bring pleasure and laughter into the life of those around you.
6- Fake it until you make it. Studies show that “faking a smile” will actually produce a mild hormonal effect in your body. If you learn to fake you will eventually make it. Use your mind-body connection to your benefit.
7- Live the moment. Be in the Now! When you’re basing yourself firmly in the present moment (rather than ruminating on past or anticipated stressors), you’re more open to happiness, laughter and having fun.

The Power of Words

Your words are powerful! I say this to every person that comes to my clinic. I also show them how powerful they are. We all have the power to choose our words and therefore alter how we feel. Did you know that according to a new study published in a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, simply reading positive words may handslighthelp you feel as those words describe?

Psychologists Francesco Foroni from VU University Amsterdam and Gün R. Semin from the University of Utrecht conducted two experiments to see if emotion language has an influence on facial muscle activity. The first study showed that reading action verbs (such as ‘to smile,’ or ‘to cry’) activated the corresponding muscles. For example, reading “to laugh” resulted in activation of the main muscle used for smiling, but caused no response in the muscles responsible for frowning. Interestingly, when presented with the emotion adjectives like “funny” or “frustrating” the volunteers demonstrated much lower muscle activation compared to their reactions to emotion verbs.
The second experiment, found that that even when emotion verbs are presented subliminally, they are able to influence judgment and feeling. Volunteers found cartoons to be funnier when they were preceded subliminally by smiling verbs than if they were preceded (again, subliminally) by frowning-related verbs.

Tthe results of these experiments show that that simply reading emotion verbs activates specific facial muscles and can influence how we feel. The researchers note these findings suggest that “language is not merely symbolic, but also somatic.” In other words, the words we use and choose can actually have an immediate impact on our bodies, not just our minds.

I always tell my clients that the connection between the mind and the body is incredibly strong. Every word is associated with a feeling and every feeling associated with a picture. Every picture is associated or linked to a physical sensation or reaction. The two experiments I discuss here are “scientific prove” to what I’ve been saying all along.

If we surround ourselves with positive words, and use as many positive words as possible; we’ll experience more positive feelings. The ripple effect from here is unstoppable. We all have the power to create positive change our your lives.

Affirmations and Hypnotherapy-the link

The secret behind using affirmations that work is what I call the Stepping Stone System. In this System each affirmation you create helps you feel comfortable with change. The more comfortable you feel with change, the faster you move towards your desired goal or outcome. Each affirmation becomes a stepping stone towards the next bigger one, until you get to your destination. Feeling comfortable and real with your affirmations makes all the difference.

Become clear about what is it you want to create. A new house, more money, a new mate, better health? What ever it is, you must clearly define your desired outcome or goal.
When creating an affirmation always use present tense and use a language that feels comfortable for you. For example, if your goal is to improve your health, the following affirmations would be a good start.
-I’m grateful for my ever improving health.
-Every day, my body moves more and more towards perfect health.
-My body is restoring perfect health, every day and every night.

Successful affirmations must “feel real to you”. A seemingly more humble affirmation will create bigger changes than one that is not compatible with your believes. People that want to attract more money into their lives often unsuccessfully use affirmations such as “I am a millionaire and I love it.” That affirmation is great, but it only works if you feel and believe this to be true.

In order for affirmations to work, you must believe the affirmation or statement to be true. For instance, take the idea of attracting more money into your life. You could start by saying:
-Each day I find more and more courage to allow more money into my life.
-It feels good to have more money.
-I enjoy having more of money in my wallet or bank account.

You must feel your affirmation as if it already is so. This step takes some practice but it is crucial to creating or manifesting your goal. Allow yourself the opportunity to feel the affirmation even if it is only a few seconds a day.

I always suggest to my clients to go into the hypnotic state before doing their daily affirmations. This undoubtedly accelerates the creation processes. Remember: The hypnotic state is direct communication to your subconscious. Your subconscious mind is always eager to do as you ask.

Last by not least; be grateful and thankful for all the blessings in your life. The more grateful you feel about what you already have, the more wonderful things that come into your life.

Creating Positive Habits

As a Hypnotherapist, I often get requests from people asking me if I can “hypnotize them” so they may stop an undesirable habit. My response to such request is usually something like this:” How badly do you want to change? And why do you want to change now?” The answers to these two questions are usually a good indicator of the success rate the person will have by using hypnosis.

handsflower9It is only when we recognize the importance of letting go of destructive thoughts or patterns in our lives that we can let go readily. In other words, to create positive change, there must be a strong desire to do so. People who have left a life of addiction will attest to this. People, who have lost unhealthy weight and kept healthy, will attest to this. What ever it is you wish to change in your life must start with a strong and clear desire to change. And then, it happens.

If you feel ready to let go of a negative habit, what follows is a simple, yet, proven method to successfully create a new positive habit in your life.

Step #1
Write down a clear description of what habit you want to change
1b- Write down how this habit is hindering your life.
1c- Write down how the new positive habit will improve your life.
1c- Write down a date you’ll start the process of change.

Step#2
Write down different possible ways to change that habit
2b-Commit to a date to start working on your options

Step #3
Create a positive mantra or statement that will support your new habit.
3b- write this mantra or statement on sticky notes and post them everywhere in your home and office to help you re-enforce your new habit.

Step #4
Before going to sleep, every night, visualize yourself already enjoying the rewards of your new habit.

Step #5
Give yourself between 21 and 30 days of new habit re enforcement. It takes anywhere between 21 and 30 days to create new neurological pathways in your brain.

I help people end negative and self destructive habits and create new positive ones. The method I’ve described above is one of the many different methods available to help any one who is ready to create change.

Age Regression as a Therapeutic Tool

We all carry memories or old ideas into our present lives. Some of those ideas are still useful, but many of them no longer serve the same purpose they did years ago, and may be causing havoc in our adult lives. As a Hypnotherapist, I get to witness many interesting things in my practice. Some times, the “root causes” we find during a session are a complete surprise to the client. But most times, the cause behind a behaviour or fear is something familiar to the client.

Age Regression is a direct and often very effective approach. There are different techniques that can be used for age regression, among the most popular are: Affect Bridge and the Calendar Method. It is a powerful tool and it should not be confused with Past Life Regression.

handslight4In age regression the therapist works under the assumption that the root of the problem or challenge the client if facing is in this life time. Past Life Regression works under the assumption the root cause of the problem is in a Past Life. Generally speaking it is used to help clients deal with traumatic or psychosomatic disorders. It is also effective for finding root causes of undesirable behaviors or fears.

A wonderful example of how effective is Age Regression as a Therapeutic Tool, is the case of client that came to see me for insomnia. She was in her mid fifties and her average nightly sleep was 3-4 hours. She had not had a full night sleep since her early twenties. When doing Age Regression we found out that the root cause for the insomnia was a frightening experience she had had as a teenager. Her teenage mind associated sleeping with possible death. And so, as the years went by, her mind “protected her” by only allowing her to sleep the very minimum. She suffered from insomnia for more than 30 years. Until we released that unreasonable fear of dying in her sleep through Age Regression.

As a therapist, I use age regression to find the Initial Sensitizing Event or root cause. Once there, the client is assisted in re-experiencing the memory from a detached perspective. The purpose is to help the person deal with the memory objectively, and take out of it, the negative emotional impact on their current situation. By creating a safe environment, the client re-connects with her/his strength, and get learnings that he or she didn’t have at the time.

This in itself can often times, help heal the emotional effects of trauma. More than that, age regression allows for a release of pent up emotional scarring. Trust between the Therapist and the Client plays a very important role when working this technique. It should only be conducted by a skilled Therapist. When used correctly, it can be of tremendous help for people looking to move on from the past into the present.

Time Line Therapy

Timeline Therapy is an NLP technique developed by Tad James. It is used by skilled Therapists to help clients re frame past experiences and learn from them.
As an NLP Practitioner I use this powerful technique because it enables clients to re-evaluate areas of their lives, let go of emotional attachments, thus change their present circumstances. This technique allows for a more direct approach to the issue or challenge the client faces. Similar to Age Regression, you can re visit your past and see in a different light circumstances that may be affecting your present. Through suggestion and conversation you will revisit events that might be troubling you Time Line Therapy is used to set you free from the intensity of memories that no longer serve a good purpose in your life.
The process allows the ability to move into the past and see how changes in the past are reflected in future behavior. My job as a Therapist is to guide you thought the process, making sure you feel safe and empowered through the process.
handslight2(1)One of my main goals with this type of therapy is to help you realize the positive learnings or aspects from past experiences. The purspose of helping you find the good in what otherwise may be recalled as a negative experience is to change your reflections of the past and therefore causing a positive effect in your present and future.
We all need to learn from history. Learning from history sets us free from repeating the same mistakes. Through Time Line Therapy I help clients become free from the emotional hold that the past had until now, so they can move freely into the present to start creating a better future.
